Hard For Me To Say I’m Sorry

A story I neglected to cover at the time. The government of Canada has officially apologized for its’ dreadful, racist Indian residential schools policy. This policy, incidentally, was virtually identical to that of the United States (“kill the Indian; save the Man”). The United States, to date, has never once apologized for any of its policies designed to exterminate the indigenous population of this nation; policies which continue, in a more genteel form, to this very day.

Did Bill Clinton officially apologize for slavery? I seem to recall that he did, but I don’t know how “official” it was. If so, it is kind of odd that no one has done the same for Native Americans.

On the other hand, any apology more than a century after the fact, when no one responsible is still alive, and when no real compensation of any kind is intended, sort of rings hollow to my admittedly white, non-oppressed ears.

  2. Not sure about Clinton and slavery but I don’t think it was an “official” meaningless, empty gesture designed solely to salve the conscience of liberal white people. And if you poll Indians, I’m willing to bet most would join me in trading such a “magnanimous” gesture for land and sovereignty.
