Today In History…

Tatanka Yotanka (Sitting Bull), Hukpapa Sioux holy man, is assassinated at the Standing Rock Agency.  His death, which came about due to US Army fears of the Ghost Dance religion, sparks the beginning of a period of brutal repression that will culminate with the Massacre at Wounded Knee two weeks later (1890).
