Noted scientist and science fiction author David Brin on the danger gerrymandering poses to the democratic health of the republic. A very good read, shared with me in response to this depressing article on Think Progress.

  1. Gerrymandering is one of the biggest problems we face as a nation. Though there is a simple solution, mathematical redistricting. District would be determined by two simple standards, 1) equalize the population between districts as much as possible and 2) minimize the distance between individuals within each district. This takes redistricting out of the hands of politicians and bases it purely on the census data. Then politicians can’t gerrymander at all.
