The Unfree Market

Two stories on why the “free market” solution to healthcare isn’t. First, a story from NPR on the difficulties of even obtaining cost and price information on medical procedures and what Colorado is doing to try to fix it. Second, an older article from the Washington Post on the secret AMA committee that engages in what would be called illegal price fixing if anyone else did it. Capitalism and the free market only works if consumers have unfettered access to the information they need in order to make informed choices. If they can’t even know in advance how much something is going to cost, and if the costs are fixed and competition thereby eliminated, there’s no free market.
