It Sucks To Be Boehner

John Boehner has, for all intents and purposes, been deposed by Ted Cruz as Speaker of the House in a (so far) bloodless coup. The Lunatic Fringe caucus of his party takes its orders from Cruz, leaving him powerless to extricate himself from the shutdown debacle Cruz got him into in the first place, even though he clearly has the votes to end this. How crazy is the Lunatic Fringe Caucus, you may ask? Crazy enough that even Grover “Drown the government in the bathtub” Norquist thinks they’re crazy. Uncharacteristically, Obama and the Democrats are standing firm and Republicans are taking huge hits in the polls. You have to work pretty hard at it to get a 10% approval rating. What’s the solution? If this trainwreck continues for a month, Democrats and a few sane Republicans can force a vote through a discharge petition, which will also likely be the final nail in the coffin of the Boehner speakership. It could also provide momentum for Democrats to retake the House, though they still have a high hurdle to overcome thanks to gerrymandering. Unless something changes dramatically, this seems like the most likely scenario to me.

Reality Bites

Very good article from the conservative press by former Reagan official Bruce Bartlett on why Republicans lost and are likely to keep losing. Spoiler alert: it’s because the inmates are running the asylum.

Is the Tea Party Christian?

A much better article than my own ruminations clearly establishes that the answer is “no”.  Neither Ayn Rand’s rancid Objectivism nor warmed-over Glibertarianism, both central (along with eye-rolling paranoia and thinly-veiled racism) to the Tea Party are compatible with Christianity.

You Say You Want A Revolution?

Have you been following all the breathless, wall-to-wall coverage of angry constituents confronting GOP lawmakers over their pro-corporate billionaire policies?

Wait, what do you mean there’s no coverage?  Isn’t this JUST like the Tea Party “revolution” that was “sweeping the nation” back in 2009?  Huh, weird.  Why, you might even think the MSM is nothing but a mindless collection of corporate stooges who exist only to placate the masses and preserve the status quo.  But that’s CRAZY talk!

Aaaaaaand our credit rating is downgraded anyway.  So now it’s official: we got exactly Jack Over Shit from the Great Compromise.  Thanks, Tea Partiers, for this historic humiliation of the United States; you are all TRUE patriots.

UPDATE:  Your Liberal Media at work.

Three Cheers for the Tea Party!

No, seriously. Thanks to the defection of members of the Tea Party Caucus, the vote to extend the odious PATRIOT Act failed, 277-148.  And this is AFTER the Obama Administration covered itself in glory by actually seeking a LONGER extension than the House GOP.  Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you.

I Can’t Imagine…

…why anyone would associate the Tea Partiers with extremist rhetoric and thinly-veiled threat of violence

And of course the real victim here is Sarah Palin.

From Our “Satire is Dead” Department…

…Tea Partiers, fresh off their opposition to the democratic election of US Senators, now set their sights on restricting the vote to property owners.  No, seriously.

Meanwhile, Cong. Steve King is smearing payments to African American and Native American farmers who were discriminated against by the government for decades as “reparations for slavery.” And just in case you missed his subtle point, he suggest that then-Senator Barack Obama (a “very very urban Senator”) was behind the aforementioned “reparations.”  I expect now the Tea Party will call for restricting the franchise to white, property-owning males, as the Founding Fathers intended.  This is, of course, not racist is any way and anyone who suggests otherwise is the real racist because the worst thing in the entire universe is for any white man anywhere to ever be accused of racism.  And besides, that was all a long time ago and nobody alive today ever owned slaves or killed Indians so why can’t you people just get over it?

This Is A Couple Days Old…

…but it bears commenting on.  Matt Taibbi’s exchange with David Gergen (last seen as the Designated Grownup in the Clinton Administration) perfectly illustrates A) the Beltway Village’s myopia and alienation from anything that even remotely approaches reality; and B) the fact that the Tea Partiers are, in fact, howling at the Moon, pissing in the corner crazy.  They are not a “movement,” they are not some grand new populist political revival: they are a comparatively small group of ultra Right Wing Republicans (with a frisson of racism) who have hijacked the GOP.  Any sincerity the TP’ers may once have had has long since been smothered in its crib as the “movement” was bought body and soul by the very Wall Street fatcats and banksters they were originally brought together to oppose.  Anger about the looting of the American economy by the rich and powerful is now whored out to a Republic Party dedicated to actively wrecking that very same economy for their own political advantage.
